Islamabad, Oct. 25 (UNI) Pakistan's first ever metro train service started commercial operations on Sunday in Lahore.
The service, known as the Orange Line has been constructed by the China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. and China North Industries Corporation and is operated by Guangzhou Metro Group, Norinco International and Daewoo Pakistan Express Bus Service. The project took five years to complete.
Chief Minister of Punjab state Sardar Usman Buzdar addressed the ceremony marking the commercial operation of the metro on Sunday. Expressing gratitude to Chinese companies for making the metro rail a reality in Pakistan Buzdar said that the Orange Line is the first eco-friendly mass transit project in the country and will provide world-class travel facilities to the people of Lahore.
He expressed confidence that the metro will lead to green GDP growth, further promote urban development and increase economic development.
As per a report by Xinhua the Orange Line covers a total of 27 km distance and has 26 stations including 24 elevated stops and two underground stations.
