Calangute: Calangute village panchayat has plans to collect garden waste, which is presently being dumped along the roadsides, giving the whole area an ugly look.

A source from the village panchayat office said that “garbage contractor is not collecting garden waste, and as such locals during the night dump the garden waste along the roadsides, which results in giving an ugly appearance to the beach belt.”

“There are many dark spots in the village which we have identified, and the panchayat will be displaying banners in these areas, asking the villagers not to dump garden waste along the roadsides.  The panchayat has plans to collect this waste and take it to Saligao plant,” the source added.

Speaking to this daily, Shawn Matins, a panch member revealed about the plan to start garden waste collection in the village, which was not happening, and as such the locals are dumping the waste along the roadsides, especially, during the night. The village panchayat has an old garbage truck which is lying ideal. The panchayat has plans to keep this truck stationed near the Poriat football ground so that the villagers can dump the garden waste near it.

Speaking further, he said that “this truck will make trips to the Saligao waste plant after 4 pm. The Saligao plant accepts garden waste. We will be also creating awareness about this facility among the villagers so that they do not dump the garden waste along the roadsides.”
