COVID cases in US reach record high due to new wave of infection

Washington, Oct 24 (UNI) The number of COVID-19 cases in the US have hit a new record high in the midst of new wave of infections, health authorities reported on Saturday.

Data provided by the Covid Tracking Project reported 83,010 new cases on Saturday, the BBC reported.

US Surgeon General Jerome Adams warned that the number of hospital admission was also growing, but at the same time he said that the mortality rates were also falling due to better patient care.

The number of COVID deaths has also steadily increased during the last six days, but is still significantly below the peak of over 2,000 daily deaths reported in April.

Hospital admission numbers are rising, too, with 41,485 people admitted to hospital on Saturday, according to Covid Tracking Project data. This was the highest figure since the end of August, but it was also lower than figures reported in April and July.

According to the Covid Tracking Project data, the US now has nearly 8.5 million cases of coronavirus ever since the pandemic began.

The number of cases reported on Saturday surpassed by more than 6,000 cases the tracking project's previous record of 76,842 on July 17.

Over the last week, the US has tallied 441,541 new infections - its largest seven-day increase since the end of July.

The latest rise in COVID cases come as pharma giants AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson have once again resumed US vaccine trials after approval from regulators.
