Hungarians protest government control over top arts college

Posted 2020-10-24, Traverse City Record-Eagle

BUDAPEST (AP) — Thousands of Hungarians marched on the streets of the capital Friday to protest government actions they claim strips one of the country’s most prestigious universities of its independence.

The march, organized on a national holiday commemorating the anti-Soviet uprising of 1956, follows weeks of protests

"There is a common set of rules concerning universities in Europe, which has developed over the centuries, and the cornerstone of these rules is institutional autonomy. This is exactly what the government is trying to take away,"
