TV reporter goes missing in Karachi

Islamabad, Oct 24 (UNI) A reporter working with a private news channel, Geo News has gone missing in Karachi, said the channel and the journalist's family on Saturday.

Ali Imran Syed is reportedly missing since Friday evening when he left his home sometime between 7-8 pm.

Imran's family has informed the police and the Sindh government spokesperson Murtaza Wahab tweeted today that Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah is looking into the matter.

The reporters mysterious disappearance started speculation in the social media as 'BringBackAliImran' is trending on twitter today in Pakistan.

Amnesty International has stated that Imran has been subjected to an 'enforced disappearance for his reporting'.

The human rights watchdog tweeted "Pakistan: Ali Imran Syed, a reporter with Geo news, has been missing from Karachi since yesterday feared to have been subject to an enforced disappearance for his reporting. The authorities must establish his whereabouts immediately."

Pakistan's Human Rights Commission has also appealed for the scribe's 'immediate release'. The institution tweeted HRCP demands the immediate release of Ali Imran Syed, a correspondent for Geo news Urdu".

Pakistan opposition parties came down heavily upon the government for the 'disappearance' of the scribe. PML-Nawaz, Vice-President Maryam Nawaz alleged that the reporter has been 'picked up' for sharing sensitive information.

She told reporters in Lahore "I have heard that he has been picked up for allegedly sharing CCTV footage (of retired Captain Safdar's arrest). This is unfortunate."

Dawn quoted Pakistan People's Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari describing the incident as an attack on the right of freedom of expression.
