LUCKNOW: After keeping low for two days, the number of
Covid-19 deaths spiked again on Friday with eight casualties in 24 hours, taking the toll since the outbreak to 845.
The death rate is now close to 1.4%, which means 14
patients out of every 1,000 are losing the battle with
coronavirus.
According to figures in the state
Covid bulletin, Lucknow’s Friday toll accounted for 20% of the total casualties in the state, that is, every fifth patient who died in 24 hours in
UP was from the city.
However, the declining transmission curve after reaching a peak in September has now taken the shape of a plateau. The number of new cases recorded in the past 24 hours was 252—11% of the total in the state. This took the overall caseload from to 61,175.
Area-wise within the city, Gomtinagar recorded 28 cases followed by Rae Bareli Road with 25, Indiranagar 20, Talkatora and Aliganj 14 each and Aashiana 11. Chinhat, Vikasnagar, Madiaon and Hazratganj recorded 10 cases each.
The cause of worry, however, was that both the number of new cases and deaths continue to be highest in the state.
Another concern was that though the transmission rate has declined by about 70% from above 900 daily in mid-September to 250-300 per day now, the death rate has come down only by around 40% from 12 per day to seven daily.
However, the good part is that the number of recoveries continues to be higher than fresh infections. On Friday, 319 patients recovered, taking the total recoveries so far to 93% of the caseload.
About 3,386 people still have the infection. Of these, (2,213) 65% are in home isolation and the rest in hospitals. Among those hospitalised, the condition of about 150 is said to be serious.
