Switzerland will regulate anew the export of plant protection products not permitted in the country due to health and environmental issue by banning the export of five particularly problematic plant protection products—atrazine, diafenthiuron, methidathion, paraquat and profenofos—from 2021. The export of the remaining such products will in future need a license and the prior consent of the importing country.
On October 14, the Swiss Federal Council amended the Ordinance on Chemical Risk Reduction (ORRChem) to reflect this. It comes into force from January 1 next year.
The international trade in dangerous pesticides has been a topic of discussion in recent years. As a host country for the secretariats of the multilateral chemical agreements and as a production location for multinational manufacturers of plant protection products, Switzerland is thus fulfilling its responsibility, an official release said.
A license is required for the export of around a hundred plant protection products hazardous to health and the environment and that are not approved in Switzerland.
