Mamata welcomes GJM leader Bimal Gurung's support to TMC in 2021 Assembly Polls,BJP dubs it compromise for power politics

Kolkata, Oct 22 (UNI) Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leader Bimal Gurung's announcement to support West Bengal's ruling TMC in 2021 assembly polls, severing links with the BJP on Wednesday, was received with mixed
reactions as chief minister Mamata Banerjee welcomed the move, the saffron brigade dubbed it as a
compromise for "power politics" ahead of the elections.
Gorkha Janmukti Morcha president Bimal Gurung, who had been absconding
for three years and evaded arrest
under scores of charges including alleged murderous assault on
policemen during 2017 agitation in Darjeeling,
appeared in this city and announced that his party wants to see the Mamata
Banerjee's government return to power
in 2021 for the third time.
Gurung, however, said he would not give up the demand for a separate
Gorkhaland state in Darjeeling district
"We welcome Bimal Gurung’s commitment to peace and decision to
withdraw support from NDA while reposing faith in @MamataOfficial's
leadership," Ms Banerjee, who is also AITC
chairperson tweeted.
"BJP's attempts to use the Gorkhaland issue for petty politics & their
untrustworthy nature now lay fully exposed before people of Bengal,"
said Ms Banerjee.
"We're confident that all the key stakeholders in hills, including
political parties & GTA along with civil society will work together &
join hands with us for the
peace & prosperity of our motherland," said the chief minister.
BJP state president Dilip Ghosh said Gururg's u-turn was an
opportunist politics to hoodwink the
people of Darjeeling for his survival in the time of election.
He said the BJP never had committed for a separate state and always
strived for welfare of the people by
resolving the problem. But each and every time the TMC government came
into the way of centre's move to
solve all the pending issues.
Ghosh claimed that the Mamata Banerjee government was using force against
her opponents toe her line as she did on Chhatrodhar Mahato in
Jhargram and now was using the same
method in Darjeeling to subdue the GJM leaders.

He asserted that the BJP never announced its support for separate
Gorkhaland state but always advocated for developmental work of the hills.
He asked who had slapped so many cases against the GJM leaders and why
so many youths of
Darjeeling have not able to return home so far since the violent
agitation in August 2017.
BJP leader Sayantan Basu charged the Mamata Banerjee
for fomenting separate state issue
and divided West Bengal.
CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty said while the BJP failed to give the
Gorkhaland state, the Gorkha leader
was pitching for fresh issues with the ruling party.
