TRICHY: Tamil Nadu has attracted foreign investments to the tune of more than Rs 40,000 crore during the Covid-19 pandemic which has ensured employment to more than 74,000 people, chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said on Thursday.
“Tamil Nadu secured the first place among the states in 2020 in attracting foreign investments,” the chief minister said after inaugurating a state- of-the- art integrated consumer goods manufacturing and logistics facility of ITC Ltd in Pudukottai district.
The chief minister is on a one-day tour to Pudukottai to review Covid-19 preventive measures and developmental work.
The ITC facility, spread across 55 acres in Viralimalai taluk, was developed with an investment of Rs 1,150 crore. It is the outcome of an MoU between the state government and ITC in 2015 in the first Global Investors Meet when J Jayalalithaa was the chief minister.
This facility will give job to around 2,200 rural people directly and a few thousand others indirectly. The company said more than 80% of the employees would be women from nearby villages.
Later, while unveiling a jallikattu statue ( portraying a bull and a tamer) in Kamaraj Nagar in Viralimalai, the CM said his government would implement the Cauvery-Vaigai Guntar river linking project. He said the project was the dream of Pudukottai farmers.
The jallikattu statue was installed at a cost of Rs 4.85 lakh. Designed by Ravi from Kumbakonam, the stature commemorates the Viralimalai jallikattu which holds the world record for the participation of the highest number of bulls.
