Loss of sense of smell and taste are two of the most common and sure-shot symptoms of Covid-19. While the primary symptoms consisted of fever, cough and shortness of breath, in March 2020, many researchers observed an increase in the number of Covid-19 patients who experienced a loss of sense of smell and taste. By April 2020, almost 60% of the infected people were diagnosed with the same.
Besides causing physical ailments, loss of sense of smell can also have a profound emotional impact on the patients. From being unable to experience the small pleasures of life, they also have to deal with the anxiety that originates from the pressures of recovering and handling the same.
Although, loss of sense of smell (Anosmia) and taste (Ageusia) are proven symptoms for Covid-19, it can cause a lot of confusion and doubts in patients, which may hinder the process of diagnosis. 02/4“Water tasted extremely sweet”
Sangeeta Soni, who was diagnosed with Covid-19 along with her family, started losing her sense of smell and taste in the 2nd week after diagnosis. According to her, she could neither smell nor taste anything, except for water, which was “extremely sweet”, she says. Besides that, she experienced congestions and cold along with a lot of fatigue.

Abhinav Kalra, who had contracted the virus in June talks about how he started developing a loss of sense of smell and taste even before showing other signs of Covid-related symptoms. He says, “I could smell or taste absolutely nothing and it began long before other symptoms started showing up”.

According to Priyamvadha, who recently won the battle against the deadly virus, says that she still hasn’t recovered her sense of smell and taste. While all other symptoms have diminished over time, it is somehow taking a lot of time for her to regain her abilities to smell and taste food, which for her is extremely distressing and stressful.
While the battle against the virus continues to rage on, one must be aware of all the symptoms and seek immediate help as and when the symptoms become more acute.
