The Bulls celebrate their third Super Rugby title in 2010

The Bulls host the Sharks at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday (kick-off 19:00) in a fixture that is rich in history.

What happened at Kings Park in 2007, when the Bulls won the first of their three Super Rugby crowns, still haunts Sharks fans to this very day.

19-13 up after the hooter had blown in that year's tournament final, the Sharks then imploded with Bryan Habana scoring a famous try before Derick Hougaard kicked the winning conversion to leave Bulls fans elated and Durbanites devastated.

The Sharks have never won Super Rugby and with that tournament now almost certainly over, they will have never come closer than they did in 2007.

Super Rugby Unlocked, however, has given South Africa's premier franchises one final opportunity to bag some silverware under the banner of what has been the premier southern hemisphere franchise competition for 25 years now.

Jake White, former Springbok and Sharks coach, is now in charge at Loftus while Sean Everitt is in his first season at the helm of the Sharks.

Here, Sport24 looks at the history between the sides.

The Bulls have dominated this fixture historically, winning twice as many times as the Sharks.

Before the Sharks' 23-15 win in Durban earlier this year, 2014 was the last time they beat the Bulls in Super Rugby which meant a run of nine matches without a win.

Super Rugby head-to-head history:

Matches - 33

Bulls wins - 20

Sharks wins - 10

Draws - 3

Average Bulls points per game - 21.7

Average Sharks points per game - 20.8

Last 5 Super Rugby meetings:

31/01/2020: Sharks 23-15 Bulls

30/03/2019: Sharks 16-19 Bulls

09/03/2019: Bulls 37-14 Sharks

12/05/2018: Bulls 39-33 Sharks

14/04/2018: Sharks 10-40 Bulls

Remarkably, you have to go back all the way to 2011 to find the last time the Sharks beat the Bulls in a Super Rugby clash at Loftus. The score ended 26-23 that day.

Matches between the sides have generally been tight over the years, but there have been some exceptions.

Head-to-head highest win margin:

Bulls - 30 points (Sharks 10-40 Bulls, 2018)

Sharks - 29 points (Sharks 29-0 Bulls, 1999)
