Fresh Covid cases drop to 3,094 in Tamil Nadu; 50 more die

CHENNAI: Fresh Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu dropped to just over 3,000 on Tuesday, which saw 50 deaths reported, taking the toll to 10,741. The case tally inched towards seven lakh with the 3,094 new cases. After 4,403 people were discharged, there were 36,734 people still under treatment for the viral infection.
While all districts recorded new cases, Chennai continued to top with 857. Five other districts had cases in three digits – Coimbatore (328), Chengalpet (242), Salem (169), Tiruvallur (137) and Tiruppur (125).

The recovery rate in the state crossed 93% and the case fatality rate was 1.55%. “We have asked all district collectors to ensure commercial establishments follow pandemic rules during the festive season. Any cluster can push up cases once again,” said health secretary J Radhakrishnan.
The number of deaths dropped in several districts including Chennai. While 16 districts reported zero deaths, Chennai reported 11 deaths, followed by Tiruppur (5). Three districts Chengalpet, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur reported four deaths each. Chennai’s neighbours - Chengalpet (191), Tiruvallur (137), and Kancheepuram (93) - together reported 421 cases. The four districts in Chennai region had 23 deaths, 1,278 fresh cases and 15,524 active patients. The other seven northern districts reported 345 cases and four deaths.
The estern districts reported the highest cases and deaths after the northern districts. Together the eight districts logged 847 fresh cases and 12 deaths. The west also had 10,612 active cases, including 3,831 in Coimbatore and 1,939 in Salem.
The 10 southern districts together recorded 311 cases and seven deaths compared to 313 cases and four deaths in the central districts. All districts in the south recorded cases in two digits. Kanyakumari and Madurai reported 61 cases each.
In the central districts, Thanjavur reported 88 cases followed by Tiruvarur (64) and Trichy (63). In the last 24 hours, 78,903 people were tested for Covid-19 in 196 authorised RTPCR testing labs across TN.
The total number of people tested for Covid-19 in the state so far is 88,58,983.
