Odisha government launches helpline for extortion plaints

BHUBANESWAR: Director general of police (DGP) Abhay on Tuesday launched a dedicated helpline number (9938910000) for the newly formed anti-extortion task force of commissionerate police. The helpline will be functional only in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.
Citizens can send extortion-related information to the number through call, SMS, WhatsApp and Telegram. Identities of the informers would not be disclosed, Abhay said.

The anti-extortion task force was unveiled on October 16 and police have already arrested at least 24 goons in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack for allegedly issuing extortion threats to businessmen, contractors, builders, shopkeepers and bus owners.
The accused includes gangster Raja Acharya.A few days ago, the DGP held a videoconference with SPs of districts and asked them to launch drives against extortionists.
