WA girl, 11, who was victim of child sex abuse dies of self-harm

An 11-year-old Aboriginal girl who had reported repeated sexual abuse has died in Perth of self-inflicted injuries on Tuesday, according to a report in The Australian newspaper.

The girl had recently provided evidence against her alleged sex abuser.

The girl had recently provided evidence about her abuse and a man charged over the crime had been released on bail this week.

Police confirmed a “tragic incident” involving an 11-year-old girl who attempted self-harm in a small town south of Perth.

The girl's family was distraught over the fact her alleged abuser had not been in jail awaiting his trial and dozens of relatives flocked to her hospital bedside.

The family of the girl was being supported by Gerry Georgatos and Megan Krakouer from the National Suicide Prevention and Trauma Recovery Project.

Ms Krakouer, a Noongar woman from the south of Western Australia, said the family was devastated.

“So many fails along the way by a system that could have prevented this loss,” she said.
