Hyderabad: Seeking to pacify the rain gods, Mayor Bonthu Rammohan accompanied by his wife Sridevi performed a ‘puja’ in River Musi on Wednesday. The couple offered silk clothes, navaratnas (gems) in a silver winnowing fan with vermillion and turmeric to Ganga Matha at the temple abutting the bank of the river at Puranapul Kaman here.

The couple later took part in an ‘Apavarna Yagam’ at the temple. Home Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali, Animal Husbandry Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav, Deputy Mayor Baba Fasiuddin and others were present.

The Mayor was following the example set by the then Nizam who performed a similar ritual after over 15,000 people lost their lives in floods in September 1908 and many buildings and bridges were damaged.

The Nizam had offered ‘chaadar’ at Moosa Quadri mosque, which Rammohan also did. He along with the Deputy Mayor also performed a puja at the tamarind tree at Osmania General Hospital that saved the lives of over 200 people. The Mayor also felicitated GHMC staff and the police and health personnel for rescuing hundreds of people in rain-hit areas.
