Fadnavis questions MVA relief for damaged crop

Osmanabad, Oct 20 (UNI) Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday slammed the Maha Vikas Aghadi(MVA) government over the issue of crops damaged by rains, but also balanced his criticism saying that "this is not the time for politics".
Talking to mediapersons here while touring the rain-hit areas, the former CM demanded that the ruling parties should show sensitivity over the issue and declare immediate help to the farmers, keeping politics aside.
He recounted how the Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar had argued that the relief of Rs 10,000 wasn't sufficient for the farmers when rains damaged crops during his tenure as the caretaker CM last year.
But, now they have "failed to declare any compensation", he remarked. "This is not the time for politics. But if the leaders in the government, including the Chief Minister, are making political statements, then I also have to speak politically," he added.
Taking a potshot at the NCP chief, he stated, "There is no leader in the state as knowledgeable as Sharad Pawar. He is well aware of the ability and rules of the Center and the state government regarding help in times of crisis."
"But, now he has the responsibility to defend the state government. Pawar was only speaking for the convenience of the government," he spoke in same breath.
Supporting Mr Pawar's decision of requesting Mr Thackeray to borrow maximum loans for aiding farmers, he said, "Borrowing money does not mean that we are sinning. The government always takes out a loan to meet the provisions in the budget, then repays it."
"In times of crisis, the government has to borrow. Maharashtra is allowed to borrow Rs 1.20 lakh crore as per the new limit set by the Reserve Bank of India. So far, the state has borrowed only Rs 60,000 crore. Therefore, the state government can easily take out loans to help farmers,"he continued.
While targetting the MVA leaders over demanding Centre's help, Mr Fadnavis asserted, "There are a lot of differences between the three parties However, they (Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress) are unanimous on the point that the Center should help."
"The central government will definitely give a lot of help to the state. But, the state government should first explain what help it will provide?," he asked.
