Dhankhar asks media for an awareness campaign to maintain social distance during puja

Kolkata, Oct 20 (UNI) Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar today asked the local media to launch an awareness campaign exhorting people to maintain distancing norms during the Durga Puja in these Covid times.
'It is necessary...for an awareness campaign to be conducted even by the local media at such places to request people to maintain distancing norm in the present Covid times and not to descend on the streets in hoards as in regular years to celebrate Durga Puja festival,' the governor tweeted.
Indicating that he would follow the high court direction, the governor said, 'In view of Calcutta High Court order in public interest would have virtual participation in Durga Puja inaugurations.
'Enjoy unmatched festivity of Puja under the umbrella of safety and security to evade Pandemic Covid. All 2 Maintain Social Distancing; Wear Mask and Wash hands.
'The court hopes that the message is spread by the police and the executive authority all over the State to make people aware that it is in their interest that a degree of self- restraint must be exercised all around.'
Yesterday Calcutta High Court directed the West Bengal government to treat all Durga Puja pandals as "no entry zones".
It also said that none, except those on a list prepared by the organisers, will be allowed to go within ten metres of "big" puja pandals. For "small" pandals the no entry zone will be five metres.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had urged everyone to see the pujas "virtually" this year.
An association of Durga Puja organisers in the metropolis on Tuesday filed a PIL before Calcutta High Court, seeking "minor modifications" to its order.
