Given triple talaq over dowry, alleges woman

Greater Noida: A 22-year-old woman has alleged that she was given triple talaq by her husband over the phone after she refused to give a statement in court confirming that divorce proceedings were underway.
The woman alleged that she had married Shoaib (24) in June 2018, but the relationship between them had soon turned sour over dowry demands. She claimed that her in-laws had demanded a 50 square yard plot, which her father was unable to give.
“I objected to the demand by my in-laws, saying that my father could not afford it. They continued to harass me and my husband said he wanted to marry another person. I even delivered a stillborn after being tortured physically by my in-laws. After this, they sent me to my parents’ house,” she said.
The woman alleged that her in-laws filed a court case against her saying that while they wanted to take her back, she was not returning.
“On August 11, my parents-in-law and husband claimed to apologise for their mistakes and I returned to my in-laws’ place. On September 26, my mother came to meet me when my husband, mother-in-law Anwari, father-in-law Ziauddin, sister-in-law Shabana and two others forcibly took signatures from us on a stamp paper and other documents and made me return to my parental house. On October 11, my husband and mother-in-law came to my village and stayed for some time. At the time of leaving, my mother-in-law called me and asked me to give a statement in court that we have applied for divorce. When I said I didn’t want to give a false statement, she revealed that the papers we were made to sign were actually divorce documents,” she alleged.
When the woman insisted that they were still not divorced, Shoaib allegedly abused her and gave her instant talaq.
In a video made by the woman, she alleged that despite multiple rounds of the Badalpur police station, her complaint against her husband and her in-laws was not being registered.
DCP (central Noida) Harish Chander said they had asked Shoaib to show the documents and he had shown the documents of divorce proceedings. “If any decision has to be taken, it will be taken by the court since the matter is sub-judice,” he said.
However, the woman has alleged that since she was given triple talaq, which has been outlawed by the government, her complaint should be lodged. She has also made a video addressed to the UP chief minister.
