Women allowed to travel on suburban trains from tomorrow

Mumbai, Oct 20 (UNI) After thorough consideration, the Railways have given consent to women to travel by Mumbai local trains from Wednesday.
Railways Minister Piyush Goyal took to Twitter to share the same, and said, "I am happy to announce that Railways will allow women to travel on suburban trains from 21 Oct between 11 am to 3 pm & after 7 pm. We were always ready and with the receipt of letter from Maharashtra Govt today, we have allowed this travel."
As of now, permission has been given only for a few hours in the day, and women can travel between those hours. However, the same might be extended in the near future.
Until date, the Mumbai local services were being used only by the workers from the essential services, 'dabbawalas' (tiffin carriers) and lawyers.
The decision regarding the general public is yet to be taken, and several protests have been staged in this matter.
The services have been shut from March 2020, ever since the lockdown was announced, and some commuters are only being allowed to travel by buses operated by BEST and State Transport Corporation.
People living far from the city depend on Mumbai locals for their daily commute, and the government is concerned about resuming the same, as it would pose a risk of spreading coronavirus.
