What is it?
The past seven years have been kind to the BMW 4 Series.
Introduced with a good deal of fanfare in 2013, it has now recorded more than 800,000 sales worldwide, with nearly 150,000 of those in the UK, its second-biggest market behind the US. Its success is spread across three models – Coupé, Cabriolet and four-door Gran Coupé – and a range of four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, which have given it a broad appeal.
But the talk surrounding this new, second-generation 4 Series is not of the task it faces in living up to the sales performance of its predecessor or its new engines, which include the 369bhp 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit of the range-topping M440i xDrive Coupé driven here, but of – yes, what else? – that grille. The 4 Series’ design has widely divided opinions but, like it or loathe it, there is more to the second-generation model than its controversial styling.
BMW says it has conceived the new 4 Series, known internally as the G22 in coupé guise, to be a more distinctive, stand-alone model with greater exclusivity than before and this is reflected in its controversial appearance and improved quality. In dimensions, too, the new model shifts further away from the model it replaces. It’s 128mm longer (at 4768mm), 27mm wider (1852mm) and 6mm taller (1383mm), giving it greater presence and a more sporting form than the car it replaces.
As with its predecessor, the new line-up starts with the Coupé, which has traditionally accounted for 33% of 4 Series sales in the UK. It will be followed next year by the new Cabriolet (17% of sales last time round) and Gran Coupé (50%). The new 4 Series shares its CLAR platform and electric architecture, including 48V capability, with the latest 3 Series. Its wheelbase has grown by 41mm to 2851mm and, as part of efforts to provide it with a more sporting feel, its tracks are wider than the previous 4 Series’, at 1575mm (28mm wider) at the front and 1611mm (18mm wider) at the rear.
Crucially, for keen drivers, the new model’s centre of gravity is also 21mm lower than the first-generation 4 Series’, model for model. This has been achieved partly through a new material mix, with aluminium now used for the bonnet, front wings, doors and front suspension.

Give it "a grilling"

Rat face...
That grille is such a travesty of design and IMO not befitting of a BMW - I say that having owned many BMW & Alpina models in the past but with that grille I wouldn't even consider one now.

I like the looks!
I have a feeling some people might mention the grille. :) That being the case, I'll probably be in a minority of one and say I actually like it! It makes the car look purposeful and dynamic, as a sporty BMW should and harkens back to BMWs of 30s and 40s.
People often complain about the Russian doll approach of manufacturers when come it to styling with different models looking the same. Well, here is an example bucking the trend. I guess damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Nope, it's just an incompetent piece of design in my view, like all recent BMWs. They've simultaneously made them a lot uglier and less distinctive. The 4 is less offensive than some, but a two door coupe should be a privileged commission for any designer. It's gross.

Like you said, that's your view and going by 'all recent BMWs', it apears the markets don't share it.

On the contrary ..
.. I think the new grille design has been better integrated on this car; it may not be to everyone's taste but I don't think it's any worse than lots of the other 'in your face' examples from various manufacturers. Many people are naturally resistant to change - I predict that most will get used to it and it will no longer be an issue. The review reads like a 4-and-a-half star verdict: I suspect GK has knocked a half off because he is in the @Markll camp wrt its looks. Nice car as far as I'm concerned - I like the interior - and it would be ideal for my requirements ... and I'm no BMW fan-boy.

Smoke and mirrors
As always Autocar buys into the marketing guff on the 4 Series. It is not a "standalone" product with "greater quality" it is a 3 Series coupe. Same mechanicals, same interior (bar the compromises inherent in a 2 door). There are no flourishes such as the automated seat belt "hand off" mechanism that appeared in the E46. Instead there is an unusual grille which is at least different from the 3 Series. It is also very similar to grilles used by BMW in the 50s and 60s so there is at least precedent for it. This seems to be the only real difference apart from a few chassis tweaks which are actually less than those applied to the E36, E46 and E92 coupes. Whether the six cylinder diesels ever appear in the range is unclear despite Autocar stating they will. The 530d is apparently not yet available to order. I expect that the forthcoming 430e PHEV will quietly replace the diesels.

I really don't mind the grill
I really don't mind the grill. Not the most elegant solution, but at least it makes it interesting, rather than blending in. Interestingly, I spotted one of these at my local Asda in Edinburgh, in this colour, and I thought it looked better than it does the pictures.
I remember when Audi first went with their big grill, around the same time as the Rover 75 V8 did the same style, and everyone hated it then. Now look at Audi, it is just part of the norm. I think with BMW this will also be the case. Future models will integrate this style of grill better

Grilled Cheese.
This isn't a right off (no pun intended) , it's not a balanced shape, from certain angles it looks a like a marriage of a smaller car to a larger booted car, inside it trad BMW, solid, last for years look, and it'll drive well, BMW will have no trouble selling a few thousand of these.

So much wrong with this
So much wrong with this design but can anyone explain the near-vertical crease behind the front wheel arches? BMW used to claim these 'air breather' vents helped aerodynamics, but they've got rid of them and left a detail that sort of looks like one from a certain angle but obviously isn't. This kind of fakery does not project a 'premium' image.
