BENGALURU: Not just face mask, ensure you don’t forget to carry that umbrella too when you step out of home this week. A yellow alert has been sounded for Bengaluru over the next two days. The city is likely to receive moderate to heavy rain until October 23, say Met officials. Tuesday could even see thundershowers, they warn.
Overnight rain
As per IMD, the city received 4cm of rain in the 24-hour period ending 8am Monday. The showers are the result of a low depression over central Bay of Bengal. Owing to overnight downpour, branches of several trees fell in many BBMP areas, while one tree was uprooted in Ashwathnagar.
Civic officials said they didn’t receive many complaints of waterlogging.
The IMD director said strong cyclones could be expected in November and December.
Of a clogged road and 5km-long traffic jam
There was a huge traffic pileup on Kengeri Road just before Nice Road due to waterlogging. National highway and Namma Metro works are going on simultaneously, owing to which traffic was diverted to one side of the road, which was filled with rainwater. The jam stretched up to 5km towards Bidadi. Locals swung into action to drain out water from the road. Waterlogging was also reported from Mallathahalli, near Kengeri.
Monday woes
Waterlogging was severe on Mysuru Road near RajaRajeswari Medical College and Hospital. The traffic situation eased only after noon.
Going to Mysuru Road during rain is nothing short of a nightmare. Due to ongoing works, there are several potholes and most of the carriageway is muddy. Chances of vehicles careening off the road are high, said Suresh Rao a motorist.
