Microsoft was accused of installing unwanted web versions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook into the computers. A Verge writer, who noticed it first, reported that Windows 10 restarted her computer without permission only to install some unwarranted apps in it.
The writer also alleged that the icons of Microsoft Office apps appeared in Start Menu even without installing Microsoft Office. He clarified that the icons that appeared on the Start Menu were not the free copies of Office but the shortcuts to the Web versions which also doubles as advertisements. However, when the Verge got in touch with Microsoft regarding the same. The company said it is "partly a mistake" and they will pause the migration that installed apps on its own to the Start Menu.
Microsoft also called the entire thing a bug. It told the publication that they installed the apps to the Start Menu which would launch in Microsoft Edge. " In what Microsoft seems to be calling a bug, though we're trying to get clarity as to which part was the bug — the change also made it look like existing web shortcuts to its own Microsoft Office products had installed a web app on your PC as well," The Verge report read.
The Verge writer who reported the issue also raised a couple of questions. He questioned Microsoft for using his Start Menu as free advertising for its Office products. He also asked why can't he have a default browser of its own choice, instead of Microsoft firing up the edge. And the most important question that the reporter asked was why did Microsoft think it would be important to force re-start her computer without taking her permission. The company is yet to answer some of his questions and give more clarity about its "bug" that made it happen.
