Head coach John Maduka explained his tactical masterclass that saw Bloemfontein Celtic grab a shock 1-0 win over last season's treble winners, Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday.
The MTN8 trophy remained elusive for Sundowns as the only cup competition the club has failed to lift after forward Sepana Letsoalo scored the only goal of the game in the 68th minute.
Maduka's side also gained revenge by knocking out the team they lost out to in last season's Nedbank Cup final.
With only 41% of the ball and three shots on target over 90 minutes, Maduka explained how they had to show tactical discipline and patience against a quality Sundowns side.
"We knew how good Sundowns are as a team and they would take the game to us," Maduka said afterwards. "They're very comfortable on the ball and are a team who will constantly attack.
"What we did is to allow them to have the ball and drop a bit defensively so we can use the spaces left open behind their defence.
"We defended well," Maduka added. "We knew if we defended well we knew that we'd be able to win the game."
A modest Maduka also tried to play down his team's chances of lifting the MTN8 trophy as his team will be hoping to go one better than reaching a cup final last season.
"I think we'll take it one game at a time there are also not easy games ahead of us but if we take it one game at a time we'll be able to get there.
"We can't talk about winning the cup before we get past the next stage of the tournament but we're looking forward to it.
"We'll try our best to make sure that we do well.
Bloemfontein Celtic next turn their attention to their league opener against Golden Arrows on Saturday.
Kick-off is at 15:30.
