Justice NV Ramana, one of the senior-most judges of the Supreme Court, said that public confidence in the judiciary is his greatest strength and that judges should take a decision fearlessly despite all the pressures and adverse circumstances. The judges should stick to their principles.
Recently, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Reddy, taking an unprecedented step, wrote a letter to Chief Justice SA Bobde and accused Justice Ramna, after which his statement is very significant.
In the condolence meeting of former Supreme Court Judge AR Lakshmanan, Justice Ramna said on Saturday, "The greatest power of the judiciary is the confidence of the people." Faithfulness, trust, and acceptance have to be earned.
He said that it is necessary for a judge to stick to his principles and take a decision without fear. It should be the specialty of any judge to stand up courageously against all odds and pressures.
After writing Reddy's letter, Justice Ramana made his remarks at a public event for the first time. Recalling Justice Laxmanan, he said, "We all should take inspiration from his words and try to maintain the independence of the judiciary, which is most needed in today's time."
Also, our values are our greatest wealth and we should never forget them. Learned a lot from Justice Laxmanan about being a good judge. Justice Lakshmanan died on 27 August.
Reddy accused of destabilizing the government
Reddy wrote a letter to the Chief Justice on October 6, accusing him of destabilizing his government by using the Andhra Pradesh High Court. Reddy had urged the Chief Justice to look into the matter. In the letter, he wrote that the TDP chief of a senior Supreme Court judge is close to Chandrababu Naidu and only the former Supreme Court judge brought this fact to the fore.
