MADURAI: N Jeevith Kumar, a government school student who cleared the national eligibility-cum-entrance test (NEET) with an impressive 664 out of 720 marks, has more reasons to celebrate as it came against multiple odds. A student of Government Model HSS Siluvarpatti in Theni district, he could score only 193/720 in his first attempt when he had enrolled for the government's coaching programme.

Considering the task he was up against and the difficult circumstances at home, many would have given up. His father K Narayanamoorthi rears goats for a living and his mother N Parameswari works in the 100-day work scheme. Jeevith had also studied in Tamil medium at school, which placed him at a disadvantage as NEET coaching was mainly in English.

His school headmaster, A Mohan, said they found him quite promising but was disappointed when he could not reap much dividends from the 45-day government coaching. He had scored 568/600 in his plus-2 examination. "Then we collected money and decided to enrol him in a private coaching centre in Thrissur in Kerala as the fee was only Rs 50,000. But he told us that he would like to study in Tamil Nadu as clearing his doubts from teachers in his mother tongue would be easier. His IQ is good and the coaching centre at Namakkal relaxed the fee in the second term as he was performing well," he said. The coaching centre also had a teacher to translate lessons for students like him to Tamil.

Jeevith who has secured an all-India rank of 1,823 in NEET is only the second student to take up medical studies from this school. He says it is high time the state adopted the syllabus prescribed by National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). "Syllabus is the key. If the NCERT syllabus is translated to Tamil and given to government school students from class 11 onwards, they will clear the exam easily like me," he told TOI.
