Hailing from village Abhinayakpur in district Kushinagar in eastern Uttar Pradesh, 17-year old Akanksha Singh has created history by scoring 720 marks in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test–Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2020. In a first, a candidate has topped the NEET exam with 100% marks.

Her father, Rajendra Kumar Rao was a sergeant in the Indian Air Force (IAF) and took early retirement in 2017 to support Akanksha throughout her NEET preparations. Her mother, Ruchi Singh works as a teacher in the government school in Kushinagar.

“Till class VIII, I wanted to join the civil services, but then I stumbled upon AIIMS Delhi and read a few research papers, which developed my interest in the field of medicine. After completing class X in 2018, I came to Delhi to prepare for NEET my father accompanied me,” Akanksha tells Education Times.

Apart from studying, Akanksha invests her time in listening to motivational speeches and is highly inspired by the journey of PM Narendra Modi.

“When I came to Delhi, it was a cultural shock and initially, I could not cope up. My performance was deteriorating but instead of giving up, I worked harder. I used to invest 8-10 hours into self-studies along with coaching classes. For me, the courage to continue is the biggest victory,” she adds.

She aspires to join AIIMS Delhi to pursue MBBS and wants to become a neurosurgeon. “I have been following the recent researches in the field of neurosurgery and I believe the opportunities are aplenty. I want to invest my time and energy into the research. My life’s aim is to help people and I want to discover affordable treatments for neurological diseases and disorders,” she adds.
