Cocoon Auction Market held at Kupwara, 21.5 metric ton cocoon sold

Srinagar, Oct 18 (UNI) Around 21.5 metric ton of cocoon was sold during a five-day Cocoon market organized by Sericulture Department in north Kashmir district of Kupwara, an official spokesperson said.

He said as many as 547 cocoon growers from Langate, Kupwara, Handwara, Karnah and Lolab areas of the district participated in the five days long auction market.

On the occasion, District Sericulture Officer ( DSO), Kupwara informed that 21.5 Metric tons of cocoon were sold by the cocoon growers fetching an amount of Rs 51.70 lakh to the cocoon growers.

“The buyers from local silk reeling units including Himalaya Silk, Bombay Silk, ASD Silk unit and JKI besides, buyers from West Bengal also participated in the market,” he said, adding the market was organized with proper adherence to COVID-19 SOPs.

Meanwhile, the DSO said that Sericulture has vast potential for income generation and the youth of the district should avail the opportunity.
