In a thrilling match that went down to the Super Over, it was the Kolkata Knight Riders who got the better off Sunrisers Hyderabad. Lockie Ferguson rattled the stumps of both David Warner and Abdul Samad to restrict SRH to 2/2 as they failed to play out the full over. At the end, KKR completed the formalities with two balls to spare.
After being asked to bat, KKR set a decent target of 164. The silver lining was that all the batters chipped in for KKR in this match. Shubman Gill (36) and Rahul Tripathi (23) provided KKR with a solid start, while Nitish Rana (29) got some runs under his belt. Andre Russell (9) was not at his best, and Eoin Morgan (34 off 23 balls) and Dinesh Karthik (29 off 14 balls) made up for it and provided KKR the much-needed late flourish.
In response, David Warner (47 off 33), who walked out to bat at No 4 today, anchored SRH’s innings. In place of Warner came Kane Williamson, who struck 29 off 19 balls and beautifully assisted his opening partner Jonny Bairstow (36 off 28 balls). Warner desperately needed support from the other end at the fag end of the innings and that was provided by Abdul Samad, who struck 23 off 15 balls and helped in pushing the match into the Super Over.
Ferguson was once again the pick of the KKR bowlers and finished with figures of 3/15.
After their win over SRH, KKR still occupy the fourth spot in the points table, but they have taken a step forward in their quest for a playoff berth. SRH continue to be at the fifth position with six points from nine games. The top three spots have been occupied by DC, MI and RCB.
Yesterday, RCB defeated RR by seven wickets and collected two more points, coming at par with MI and DC in terms of points.
