Margao: A fisherman from Benaulim, Francisco Fernandes popularly known as Pele was recently recognised by the state’s tourism department for rescuing five sea turtles that were entangled in fishermen’s nets earlier this year.
In June this year, Pele along with other traditional fishermen while venturing into the sea caught five turtles in their fishing nets just off the Vaddi beach in Benaulim.
After rescuing the turtles from the nets, four were released into the water while one received treatment for wounds by the forest and animal husbandry departments. Pele was given a token of appreciation by Deputy Chief Minister and Tourism Minister Manohar Babu Azgaonkar as a ‘true friend of Goa Tourism’. The fisherman has also been felicitated for his efforts by the local MLA.
Speaking about the recognition, Pele said he hoped his actions would help promote tourism and environmental protection.
“This is an achievement but I also hope it goes as a message to fishermen and locals to help in protection of our environment, which will send a positive message to promote tourism in our state,” he said.
