Love goes sour, man moves Gujarat HC seeking Rs 50,000 spent on dating back!

Gujarat high court
AHMEDABAD: There is nothing called a free lunch, goes the saying. According to a young man from Mehsana, there cannot be any free coffees and gifts too. In fact, after his relationship went kaput following a spat, the man was quick to put forth a demand for reimbursement of Rs 50,000 dating expense, money which he had spent on the girl, till their love lasted.
It is another matter that the demand to get the ‘date money’ spent on the relationship which lasted close to two years has landed the youth in trouble when the ex-girlfriend prompted the woman to lodge an FIR against him for extortion. The youth has now filed a petition in Gujarat high court requesting it to quash the FIR.
The case pertains to Surat-based youngsters. The 27-yearold man and 21-year-old girl met on social media. Both are natives of a village in Mehsana district, belong to the same caste and have settled in Surat.
‘Threatened her during phone calls’
Their relationship began in April 2018 and lasted till February 2020. The man apparently snapped ties in a fit of anger after the woman declined to join him on a particular occasion because the date coincided with her college exams.
The relationship turned sour and the woman approached Katargam police and lodged an FIR in March this year. She alleged that soon after the breakup, the man started demanding Rs 50,000 from her claiming that he had spent that much money on their excursions. She refused payments citing she was a student and had no means of an income. Upon her refusal, the man started abusing her on the phone and threatened her. She then blocked his calls.
A few days later, she received a message threatening her that if she did not pay back the money, he would publish photographs of her on social media. She switched off her phone for a few days. The man contacted her again and raised his demand to Rs 60,000.
The man has now moved the HC through advocate Anvesh Vyas and sought quashing of the FIR denying all allegations, and holding the FIR as malicious.
