Madras HC grants interim bail to cop accused in custodial deaths case

Madurai, Oct 17 (UNI) The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Saturday granted three days interim bail to suspended Police Constable X.Thomas Francis to attend the final rites of his father who died on Friday evening.
Francis was among 10 police personnel attached to the Sathankulam Police Station in Thoothukudi district were arrested connection with the custodial deaths of traders P.Jayaraj and his son J.Bennicks.
Justice Abdul Quddhose granted the interim bail to Francis with effect from October 17 noon till October 19 evening with a condition that the police constable should appear before the Megnanapuram police station in Thoothukudi district at 1000 hours during the bail period.
The Judge directed that Francis should bear the escort expenses of the police and directed the police to ensure the safety and security of the trial prisoner.
The Madurai Bench had dismissed the bail petition of Francis on October 1.
On June 19, Jayaraj and Bennicks were picked up for questioning by the Sathankulam police for allegedly violating lockdown rules by keeping their mobile accessories shop open beyond permissible hours. An FIR was filed against them on the same day. The father-son duo was allegedly tortured by the police while in custody, leading to their deaths.
