Flood situation grim in river krishna

Vijayawada, Oct 17 (UNI) The flood situation is grim in river Krishna as it is receiving heavy inflow of water while several residential localities in the city and several villages in other areas were marooned in flood water.
As much as 6.82 lakh cusecs of water was being discharged at Prakasam barrage here to the downstream into sea.
However, officials said that the inflow of water into river Krishna is likely to decrease by tonight.
Official sources said that 4.45 lakh cusecs of water was being released to the downstream Prakasam barrage from the Pulichintala project.
The water level at Prakasam barrage stood at 57.05 feet.
The Munneru, Paleru, Velagaleru and Budameru streams are also in spate resulting in heavy inflows into river Krishna.
Several residential colonies including Ranadevenagar, Ramalingeswara Nagar areas in Krishna Lanka and some colonies at Yanamalakuduru area are in one to two feet deep water.
The flood victims were shifted to relief centres set up in the Indira Gandhi stadium.
In Guntur and Krishna districts, several villages were inundated in flood water and road connectivity was disrupted to the villages. Adding to the woes, many villages have no power supply. The villagers were seen wading through the flood water to go to safer places.
Road traffic disrupted between Amaravati-Vijayawada as flood water was overflowing. Several island villages located in Avanigadda, Mopidevi and Nagayalanka mandals in Krishna district were submerged in flood waters.
Meanwhile, horticulture crops like papaya, maize, turmeric, yam and vegetable crops suffered a huge damage after they submerged in the flood water.
As per preliminary estimation, crops were damaged in about 25,000 hectares in Krishna and Guntur districts.
Home Minister Mekathoti Sucharita visited some of the flood affected villages on Saturday. The farmers showed her their damaged turmeric, yam and banana crops at Vemuru village in Tenali constituency of Guntur district.
The Home Minister later went to Pedalanka village in a country boat.
District incharge Minister Ranganatha Raju and Collector Samual Anand accompanied her.
Meanwhile, dry weather prevailed in the districts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh today.
