Verry Elleegant wins: First Caulfield Cup for Waller

Chris Waller landed his first Caulfield Cup, as did jockey Mark Zahra, when classy mare Verry Elleegant landed the $5 million plus prize on Saturday afternoon.

She prevailed in a close finish to see off the former Epsom Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck, the top weight, with the New Zealand-trained long shot The Chosen One in third place, just ahead of Prince of Arran.

The winner had landed the group 1 Turnbull Stakes last time out while Anthony Van Dyck was carried out on his sword trying to concede weight to the whole field.
