CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu law minister C Ve Shanmugam on Thursday said Anna University vice-chancellor M K Surappa had bypassed chancellor, pro-chancellor and the state government and contacted the Centre on his own on the issue of Institute of Eminence (IoE) status for the university. “His action amounts to indiscipline. Explanation has been sought from him,” the minister said.
The VC in a letter to the Centre had said that Rs 314 crore a year (Rs 1,570 crore for five years) can be generated through internal accruals for getting the IoE status.
Some provisions against reservation policy of TN
Speaking to reporters in Villupuram, the minister said CM Edappadi K Palaniswami had set up a committee of ministers to look into the request of the vice-chancellor for IoE status and the issue is pending. The government had also made it clear in the assembly that it would not accept anything that would affect the 69% reservation policy of former CM J Jayalalithaa in the state. “Since certain provisions of the IoE were against reservation policy of the state, TN had requested the Centre to clarify them, but they have refused. We have said it is not possible at all now to get IoE status,” said Shanmugam, a member of the committee constituted to look into the issue.
