GUWAHATI: The ongoing probe into the Assam Police recruitment scam led to the arrest of an SP-rank officer on Thursday.
The arrested policeman, Kumar Sanjit Krishna, happens to be the brother of Assam chief secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna. Sanjit, who was reportedly absconding on Wednesday, reached the state police headquarters here around 11 am and was questioned by senior police officials for hours, sources said.
After his arrest, Sanjit was taken to Mohendra Mohan Choudhury Civil Hospital for medical examination and Covid test.
Earlier, former DIG PK Dutta was arrested and sent to jail for his alleged involvement in the racket that first came to light after the question paper for the examination of sub-inspectors was leaked minutes after the test commenced on September 20.
Inspector General of Police (CID) Surendra Kumar told TOI, “He has been arrested by the CID on Thursday and will be produced before a competent court on Friday.”
Sanjit, who was holding the post of SP (Karimganj), was transferred as SP of Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO), Barpeta, on Sunday after his name surfaced in the scam. Subsequently, he was was summoned by the CID.
Sources said the question paper was allegedly leaked in Karimganj district at Sanjit’s command in the presence of other accused, some of whom have already been arrested.
Sanjit was questioned by the CID on Monday and his residence in Guwahati was also raided on Wednesday. On Tuesday, the CID raided the officer’s Karimganj residence and interrogated five police personnel, including the driver of the former SP, the in-charge of the police guest house and the security guard of the SP’s official residence. After this, CID officials produced the five police personnel at a local court in Karimganj.
Police are also investigating the involvement of junior PK Dutta, an APS officer who served as Sanjit’s deputy in Karimganj.
Earlier, chairman of the State-Level Police Recruitment Board, Pradeep Kumar, had resigned from his post taking owning moral responsibility for the question paper leak. So far, 50 people have been arrested in connection with the scam. Among the accused, former DIG PK Dutta and BJP leader Diban Deka are said to the key conspirators. Both of them have been sent to 14-day judicial custody.
Police have also seized over Rs 5.4 crore in cash in raids conducted in four districts in connection with the scam.
