Gumla: Anticipating threat to her life, the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) of Gumla on Thursday shifted the 14-year-old gang-rape survivor from Chainpur to a shelter home. After recording her statement at a local court on Wednesday, police produced her before CWC.
CWC member Sanjay Bhagat said, “There might be a threat to her life from the accused and thus we have taken custody of the girl. She wants to study and we shall arrange for her admission to a government-run residential school in Gumla soon. She is a student of Class V.”
Meanwhile, police sent her uncle and two brothers to jail for thrashing two of the five accused. All the five accused were earlier arrested. The girl was gang-raped by village youths including three minors on October 10. The girl did not come back that night and the next day, when her uncle returned and learnt that two of the accused had threatened of dire consequences, he gathered two others and thrashed the duo.
Since both the girl and the accused hail from same village, police are keeping a tight vigil in the area. Chainpur officer in-charge Sudama Ram said, “There is peace in the village, but we are vigil and prepared to handle any untoward situation.”
Gumla deputy commissioner Shishir Kumar Sinha met the victim’s family on Thursday and assured all support. He also held a meeting with the villagers as a part of a confidence-building measure and admonished block level officials for failing to undertake development projects in the village, which doesn’t even have a proper approach road.
