Iran vows to respond if border areas hit by fire from Karabakh conflict – Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW, Oct 16 (Sputnik) Iran will take retaliatory measures if its border areas come under fire as a result of the hostilities in Azerbaijan's conflict-torn Nagorno-Karabakh region, spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry Saeed Khatibzadeh said.
On Thursday, Iran’s IRIB broadcaster reported that eight military projectiles had fallen in the country within the past 24 hours amid the ongoing Armenia-Azerbaijan clashes.
“Rejecting gossips regarding Iranian border guards’ reciprocation, he [Khatibzadeh] said Iranian citizens' security and calmness at border areas is considered as a redline for armed forces. #Iran will not be indifferent if such accidents happen again,” the Iranian government's official Twitter account said.
The fighting on the line of contact in Nagorno-Karabakh started on September 27. The sides have accused each other of starting the firing. The international community strongly condemned the escalation and called on parties to settle the differences via dialogue, while Turkey has pledged its full support for Azerbaijan.
Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin invited the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia to come to Moscow and meet with their Russian counterpart in a bid to negotiate a ceasefire. The talks resulted in an agreement on a humanitarian ceasefire beginning at noon on October 10. The pause was for the parties to exchange prisoners and bodies of killed soldiers as well as negotiate additional details of the ceasefire. The sporadic clashes are, however, still underway.
