New Delhi: The monsoon’s withdrawal this year will be among the most delayed in recorded history, the weather office said on Friday. “Due to another low-pressure system in the Arabian Sea by October 19, we do not see the withdrawal of the monsoon winds from the country for at least a week more,” India Meteorological Department director general M Mohapatra said.
The previous most delayed withdrawal years were 2010 and 2011, on October 26 and October 24, respectively, official data showed. The IMD started tracking the monsoon withdrawal dates in 1975. Like this year, 2011 too had witnessed the rain-boosting La Nina phenomenon. In 2010, India saw one of its worst droughts in over a century.
In 2020, the monsoon may pass both these markers since it has so far retreated only from the northern and north-western parts of the country. La Nina has already provided heavy rainfall to the eastern and central states after the monsoon season officially got over on September 30.
