BATHINDA: Punjab farmers angry over snub by the Modi government decided on Thursday to continue their protests on railway tracks, toll plazas and at the business establishments of the corporates.
The 30 farmer organisations — BKU Ekta Ugrahan skipped the meeting and BKU Lakhowal was again accepted into the fold — also decided to organize huge protests across Punjab on October 17 where the effigies of the Modi government will be burnt. The farm organisations, which are protesting against the contentious agrimarketing laws since October 1, said that the farmers are firm on their resolve to get the three laws withdrawn by the Union government and will not make any compromise on this issue.
The farmer groups also decided to launch a movement against the BJP, which they described as “antifarmer.”
Farmers to gherao BJP elected leaders
Kirti Kisan Union president Nirbhay Singh Dhudike, under whose leadership the meeting was organised on Thursday, said the farm organisations feel betrayed by the Union government as no Union minister turned up for the meeting with farmer representatives in Krishi Bhavan on Wednesday. “We have now decided to intensify the protests and specifically target BJP. Wherever BJP ministers or leaders will hold either physical or virtual meetings, we will hold protests at the venue,” he said.
Adding details, Dhudike said, “Wherever BJP MLAs or Union ministers go for public programmes, the farmers will gherao them and lay siege to their entourage. They will not be allowed to take part in any public function to tell people about the farm laws. The farmers will also hold protests at the venues of the virtual meetings by the BJP ministers with people in Punjab.”
Krantikari Kisan Union president Darshan Pal said the farm groups will not allow any activist to take law in their hands and will hold protests in a peaceful manner. “We will take care that no one turns to violence in the guise of farmers,” he said.
The farmers, however, have decided to take back the call for boycott of the Congress party after the Amarinder government decided to convene a special session of the state assembly on October 19.
The farm organisations will again hold a meeting on October 20 to review the protests."
