BENGALURU: The cash-strapped
Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (
KSRTC) has decided to suspend recruitments and also to rent out more buses under casual contract to reduce losses.
The state-run
bus corporation has incurred heavy losses due to cancellation of services because of the
pandemic. KSRTC chairman
M Chandrappa on Friday conducted a virtual conference of officials to review the performance of the corporation.
“We are suspending all recruitments until further orders and also planning to rent out more buses under casual contract to reduce losses. We will also offer different training programmes at corporation training centers” said Chandrappa, who is also the MLA of
Holalkere.
“It’s not possible to operate buses under profit or losses although the corporation has to make some stringent programmes to survive. We have to mobilise other forms of
revenue in addition to the passenger revenue” said Chandrappa.
“The number of buses operational has reduced from 8,200 to 5,100 after
Covid. The daily ridership too reduced from 30 lakh to 10 lakh. The present situation of the corporation is very critical and may take many months or years to improve. Given this situation, there is a need to make some tough decisions” he adds.
