No need IoE status for Anna varsity : Anbazhagan

Chennai, Oct 16 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister
K P Anbazhagan today said Anna University does not require
the Institute of Eminence (IoE) status if it affects the 69 per cent
reservation policy.
Talking to reporters here to clarify the government's stand
in the wake of Anna University Vice-Chancellor M K Surappa
directly writing to the Centre stating that it did not need the
Rs 1,500 crore funds for IoE status, he said the State
government has decided that the varsity does not need the
IoE status.
''By attaining the IoE, the 69 per cent reservation will be
affected. Attaining the special status will also increase
the fees,'' he added.
He said the State government will be able to provide the
same benefits which the varsity will receive by getting
the IoE status.
The State government will never allow the reservation
and fees structure to be affected, Mr Anbalagan said.
On the controversy over Mr Surappa writing directly to
the Centre, which has created a controversy with the
Opposition parties condemning it, the Minister said if
the Vice-Chancellor's actions were not proper, it will
be taken to the notice of the Governor, who is the
Chancellor of the State-run varsity.
Action will be initiated by the State government against
Mr Surappa based on his response,' he added.
Mr Surappa in his letter to the Centre said the university
would be able to raise the Rs 1,500 crore fund (Rs 314 crore
a year) to get Institute of Eminence status.
Law Minister C Ve Shanmugam also took objections to the
act of Mr Surappa and said explanation had been sought
from him and disciplinary action would be taken.
