BHUBANESWAR: Director general of police (DGP) Abhay on Wednesday asked superintendents of police (SPs) to act promptly in cases related to viral videos, revealing corruption by cops, crime against women and violation of human rights.
Addressing SPs at a video conference (VC), Abhay said any delay in investigation of sensitive videos that went viral on social media might trigger tension and law and order problems. Sources said the SPs were asked to take the assistance of the cyber cell of the Crime Branch to solve difficult cases.
“Police stations should immediately verify the authenticity of viral videos and take the help of locals to identify the persons, who shot the videos. Police should ascertain whether the persons, who shot the video, are accomplices of the accused. In some cases, those, who shot the videos, could be whistle-blowers. Police should not harass such whistle-blowers,” a senior police officer, who was present in the VC, said.
In the meeting, Abhay asked SPs to ensure that the police stations are covered under the CCTV surveillance system. Sources said while several police stations, mostly in rural areas do not have CCTV cameras, many police stations have been functioning with defunct cameras. The DGP instructed immediate replacement of the defunct cameras with high frequency surveillance gadgets.
Besides discussing security measures ahead of Durga Puja, the DGP asked the SPs to ensure smooth delivery of government’s welfare schemes to Covid-infected cops. “Treatment of the virus-infected personnel and prevention of the spread of the virus in police stations were discussed in the meeting,” the officer said.
Till end of September, at least 6,829 police personnel were infected by Covid-19 virus and 33 of them succumbed during treatment. “Nearly 70 percent of the total infected police personnel have recovered from the infection and resumed duty in police stations and other police establishments in districts. A total of 400 Covid-cured police personnel have already donated plasma,” the officer informed.
