Over 8,000 Evacuated in Maharashtra's Solapur District | Over 8,000 people from Pandharpur tehsil in western Maharashtra's Solapur district have been shifted to safer places following heavy rains, an official said on Thursday. The district is witnessing heavy showers for the last two days. "Excess water is being released from Ujani Dam into the Nira and Bhima rivers, so as a precaution, around 8,400 people living along river banks in the Pandharpur tehsil have been shifted to safer places," said Sachin Dhole, Sub Divisional Officer.

The Army is involved in the rescue and relief operations in parts of the city hit by rain fury and deluge along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and evacuated several marooned people on Wednesday. The victims were extricated from the debris by the personnel of police, fire brigade and disaster management cell, and were rushed to a hospital where they were declared dead, police said.

The 10 districts are Bagalkot, Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Kalaburagi, Raichur and Vijayapura in the north region and Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada in the coastal region.

Use Rainwater for Irrigation: Gadkari | Union minister Nitin Gadkari has written a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, suggesting that rain water from Mumbai be used for irrigation, supply to industries around the city and for horticulture in cities like Nashik and Ahmednagar. Excess water can also be carried to drought-prone areas for domestic and other uses to overcome water scarcity, he said in the letter. This plan can help to solve 'troubles created due to the Mithi river' in Mumbai which has become a critical issue over the years, he said.

At least 19 people were killed since Tuesday night in different areas here in wall and house collapse incidents due to the heavy downpour, officials said. The victims included a toddler.

In Karnataka, heavy rains for the past three days wreaked havoc in some northern parts of the state, causing inundation, crop loss and damage to houses. Coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi received very heavy rains since Tuesday morning, resulting in water logging in cities and damage to property in the rural areas.

PM Modi Assures Help | Prime Minister Modi spoke to Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao as well as Reddy and assured them of all possible support and assistance from the Centre in rescue-and-relief work.

RECAP | K T Rama Rao, Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development, held an emergency meeting with senior officials and reviewed the rescue and relief operations in Hyderabad. He said several trees and electricity poles were uprooted due to the deluge and directed the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL) to coordinate with Municipal Administration and Police Departments to ensure that power is restored at the earliest.

4 Swept Away in Flooded Stream | Four people have been swept away by a swollen stream at Pune in Maharashtra following heavy rain in the district, police said. Besides, a team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been rushed to a village in Mohol tehsil of neighbouring Solapur district where a flood-like situation arose. In Pune's Khanota village, four people travelling on two motorcycles tried to cross a swollen stream, but got swept away by the water, an official from Daund police station said.

Hyderabad witnessed monsoon fury that inundated roads, flooded houses, toppled and swept away vehicles and left 19 people dead, as unprecedented rains lashed the capital city, besides some other districts in Telangana. The rains showed no signs of abating in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured all possible help to the two Telugu-speaking states. For October, the Begumpet met office observatory in Hyderabad recorded the highest ever rainfall of 192.1 mm on Wednesday.
