Parliamentary panel summons MHA officials on 'atrocities against women'

NEW DELHI: Amid the political heat over the alleged gang-rape in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, a parliamentary panel has called Union home ministry brass next week to know its views on 'atrocities and crime against women'.
Officials said the home secretary has been asked to appear before the department-related parliamentary standing committee, chaired by Congress Rajya Sabha MP Anand Sharma, on October 22 to hear the views of the ministry of home affairs on the subject.
The reconstituted panel will also discuss issues related to the management of the Covid-19 pandemic, as per a PTI report.
Crimes against women registered a 7.3% increase from 3.78 lakh cases in 2018 to 4.05 lakh cases in 2019. Majority of cases under crime against women under IPC were registered under ‘cruelty by husband or his relatives’ (30.9%) followed by ‘assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty’ (21.8%), ‘kidnapping & abduction of women’ (17.9%) and ‘rape’ (7.9%). The crime rate registered per lakh women population is 62.4 in 2019 in comparison to 58.8 in 2018.
India recorded on an average 87 rape cases daily in 2019, according to the NCRB report on 'Crime in India' for the year 2019.
A total of 32,033 cases of rape were lodged in 2019, which was 7.3 per cent of all crimes against women during the year. In 2018, as many as 33,356 rapes were recorded across the country, up from 32,559 in 2017, according to the data from corresponding years.
