GUWAHATI: The National Register of Citizens (NRC) authorities in Assam have ordered the state's deputy commissioners to submit to it the names of "ineligible" people who have made the cut and delete these names from the final list, reports Rokibuz Zaman. The final NRC, published on August 31 last year, saw the exclusion of the names of 19,06,657 applicants. A total of 3,11,21,004 names were included out of 3,30,27,661 applicants.
State NRC co-ordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma wrote a letter, with the subject "Regarding reports received for change in result of persons of final NRC," to all DCs and district registrar of citizen registration on October 13.
The letter said: "Some names of ineligible persons - belonging to categories of persons declared as a foreigner by foreigners' tribunals, persons marked as doubtful voters by the election officials or persons whose cases are pending at Foreigners Tribunals and along with their decadents have found entry to the NRC."
The letter came as the Assam government continued their demand of re-verification - 20% in border districts and 10% elsewhere - of the included names in the final NRC.
