Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) on Thursday confirmed that actor Rajinikanth paid Rs 6.5 lakh as property tax for his Raghavendra marriage hall, a day after he had moved the court against the civic body over the same issue. The actor expressed his regret for having not appealed to the civic body over the tax dispute and approaching the Madras High Court instead on his official Twitter handle. His tweet can be translated as saying, "We should have appealed to the greater Chennai corporation. We could have stopped the mistake. #Experienceislesson.’"
Rajinikanth claimed that he had sought remission of property tax from the GCC for the popular marriage hall that the actor owns. He said that he sought remission owing to business plummeting due to the pandemic and refund of all advance payments since the March lockdown. He claimed that the GCC did not respond to him and hence he was moving the court. The HC, however, warned the actor of imposing costs for wasting the court's time when he should have sent a reminder to the civic body for its tax demand of Rs 6.5 lakh for the months April-September for the marriage hall.
