NEW DELHI: A traffic cop sustained injuries after being dragged for around half a kilometre on the bonnet of a car by an errant driver who was trying to dodge police checking in Delhi Cantonment in Southwest district.
The car driver was stopped by locals and other policemen, who chased him after seeing the cop getting dragged and falling off the bonnet. The incident was also filmed by some people on their mobile phones and circulated on social media.
The incident took place around 5pm on Monday. The accused driver, Shubam, lives with his family in Uttam Nagar. Shubham was driving along with a friend on the carriageway going towards Tilak Nagar from Dhaula Kuan when he was flagged down for checking by the traffic police officers.
In his complaint, the injured cop, Mahipal Singh, said that he was on duty at Station Road in Delhi Cantonment when he saw a white car with a fancy numberplate being driven in a zigzag manner and signalled it to stop.
When Singh went to check the car’s documents, Shubham suddenly sped off. Singh tried to stop him by jumping onto the bonnet. The cop held on to the windshield wipers to save himself even as Shubham swerved dangerously to get rid of him. He continued driving until the cop fell off. He has been booked for obstruction and assault on a policeman, apart from rash driving and causing serious injury.
While such acts of policemen can be considered heroic, the question is whether cops really need to put their life in danger for violation of traffic rules when they can simply note down the registration number of the vehicle and book the offender later.
Asked if traffic cops really needed to indulge in such acts, which also jeopardises the safety of other commuters, senior traffic officials said that earlier it had been collectively decided to discourage policemen from doing so. “In some incidents, the driver of the offending vehicle initially stops. However, when he starts speeding off, officers are forced to climb onto the bonnet,” said a senior traffic officer.
Traffic cops have been told to note down the numberplate or click a picture in case they fear the violator won’t stop. Special commissioner (traffic) Taj Hasan said, “There are clear directions that no traffic personnel should endanger their life. Their safety is our utmost concern.”
