Delhi: Minor driver held for mowing down 2 kids

The two sisters were hit by the car late at night on Monday
NEW DELHI: A day after two sisters, aged seven and four, were killed by a speeding car on GT Road at Model Town, police on Wednesday apprehended a boy, 17 years and 11 months old, who was allegedly driving the vehicle, a white Honda City, at the time of the accident.

The police tracked down the boy with the help of broken pieces of the car's number plate that had fallen at the spot and using CCTV footage in which the boy was spotted driving in the wrong carriageway after the accident.

In recent times, several juveniles have been involved in fatal automobile accidents in the city. Parents must take responsibility for such incidents. It is their job to ensure that an underage kid doesn’t get behind the wheels. There is a reason why we have an age limit before issuing a driver’s licence. The incident underlines once again that in immature hands, a car can become a killer weapon.

The boy is a student of Class XII at a private school. The police are seeking legal opinion on whether he can be tried as an adult. Police have also booked his father under the amended sections of the motor vehicle act for allowing his minor son to drive a car.
The accused boy was allegedly driving at a high speed while returning home late at night. Police said the number of the car was established after joining the small pieces of the number plate at the spot.

The deputy commissioner of police (northwest), Vijayanta Arya, said that during investigations, CCTV footage was checked and the car was spotted at different locations. The police have taken the boy’s blood sample to check for any traces of alcohol.
The two sisters were hit by the car late at night on Monday when they were on an outing with their family. Their five-year-old brother and an uncle with whom they were crossing a road in front of Gurdwara Nanak Piao were also injured and are in hospital. While the two girls died in different hospitals during the early hours of Tuesday, the condition of the boy and the 55-yearold man are said to be stable.
The girls were identified as Ishika (7) and Bhoomi (4). Those who were injured are Gaurav (5) and Milap Singh (55), all of them residents of Burari in north Delhi.
“I want justice for my children. If the accused is a juvenile, he shouldn’t have been driving the car,” said Jaspal Singh, the bereaved father. “I saw one of my daughters flying in the air when the car hit her. I was just 10 steps away, but before I could react, the girls had been run over. I lit the pyre of my two little girls and only my heart knows how life has changed in just a day. My son is battling for his life and doctors say he might have to undergo surgery as well.”
Arya said the car had a Haryana registration number. "Records of different road transport authorities of Haryana and Chandigarh were checked thoroughly and details of the vehicle were obtained. It was learnt that the car had been sold thrice and the latest owner was identified," she said.
The owner was contacted and his questioning revealed that he had given the car to one of his relatives, whose son, a Class 12 student, was driving it at the time of the accident. "The boy was apprehended from his house in Model Town, and on his information, the vehicle that had already been sent to a mechanic’s shop for repairs, was seized, Arya said.
