LAKHS OF Vodafone Idea customers in Pune and nearby areas were left fuming on Thursday morning as connectivity issues cropped up due to heavy rain. Services were restored later in the evening after the company deployed interim solutions and restored voice and data services. The disturbance in the network was caused by the flooding of a key site at Pune.

The city and its neighbouring areas have received heavy rain since Wednesday night. The rain caused waterlogging and flash floods across the city and the district, leading to several cars and properties being damaged.

Subscribers of Vodafone Idea woke up to realise that there was little or no connectivity on their mobile phones, which failed to be resolved as the day progressed. Many users took to social media to vent their disappointment about the outage.

An company official said the outage was due to flooding of an important site at Kalyaninagar region of Pune. Unlike mobile towers whose area of influence is local, the site in question is an important technical site and controls the network of not only Pune but also parts of Maharashtra. Flooding in this site, thus, affected network connectivity of a larger geographical area.

The official spokesperson of the company issued a statement acknowledging the extent of the problem. “Heavy rain in Pune has resulted in flooding of some areas, including one of our key sites in the city. This has caused partial disruption in services for some customers earlier today. Our technical team has worked non-stop and deployed interim solutions and restored voice and data services,” the statement read.
