Gangster Azharuddin Sindhi murdered inside Vadodara central jail

VADODARA: Notorious gangster Azharuddin Sindhi alias Ajju Kaniyo was murdered by a fellow inmate inside the Vadodara Central Jail on Wednesday morning.
Jail sources said that Ajju had an altercation with a murder accused. The scuffle between the two criminals escalated to such a level that the murder accused pulled out a tin shed of the roof and slit Ajju’s throat. Jail staff rushed Ajju to SSG Hospital in a critical condition. Doctors at the hospital declared him dead after brief treatment. Senior jail officials did not share any details about the attack, nor did they divulge details about the attacker.
Sources said that this was probably the first incident of murder of an inmate inside the Vadodara Central Jail. As the news of Ajju’s death spread, his aides crowded at SSG Hospital and created a commotion. Police were deployed in large numbers at the state-run hospital to control the situation and avoid any untoward incident.
Ajju was arrested on August 22 from Mehsana by the detection of crime branch. He was on run for 65 days after escaping from Wadi police station. He was picked up in an extortion case, but managed to flee.
Ajju has been accused of several offences like attempt to murder, extortion, rioting, loot and assault. He was detained four times under Prevention of Anti-Social Activities (PASA) Act and was even externed twice from the city. He was also accused of a communal riot that broke out in the city in 2007.
